Basic Education Program

Program Goal: Children and adolescents (aged 7-14) that are deprived, excluded and vulnerable will have the capacity to improve their lives and bring lasting and positive change in their communitiesby2018.

Core Objectives

1.     To establish positive relationships for 1,688 enrolled children & adolescents to live in supportive homes and communities by 12% on the baseline survey by the end of June 2018.

2.     To Improve 50% target children and adolescent literacy, numeracy and critical life skills by 2018.

3.     To Improve 50% of the target children and adolescent health status and their active participation in community life by 2018.

Achievement by Domain

FHIDO’s engagement in the area of basic education played very significant role by reducing repetition and dropout rate and increasing enrollment rate. The different G+4 class rooms, libraries, school water facilities and laboratory room built in different schools found in Arada Sub-city and the different materials (laboratory equipment, reference books and IT materials) provided for different schools extensively contributed to education quality augmentation and academic performance improvement of target children in particular and achievement of EFA goal in general. The following are the major achievements registered by FHIDO.

Domain One: Children and Adolescents have Positive Relationships in Supportive Homes and Communities.

Pathway 1: Responsive Parents and Caregivers

To enhance parents’ knowledge on better parenting, FHIDO has been providing training for parents to improve their understanding on children as well as how parenting practices can affect the wellbeing of children, how to support and follow up their children for better educational achievement. As a result of the training, parents become well aware on better parenting skills, and improved their role and responsibilities on their children. It also enabled parents to understand the needs of their children and support them in their children education as well as in their day to day life.

Pathway 2:  Resilient Households

One of the strategies of FHIDO to empower its target groups is through the support it renders for care givers and families to engage into income generation activities. To improve care givers and parent’s economic capacity, FHIDO has been identifying and providing trainings on business selection, planning and management (SPM) and financial management for poor family members so that they can effectively manage small scale businesses. Parents who were provided the necessary capacity building trainings were provided with income generating materials to engage in businesses .They were provided materials like Injera stove, Bread Stove, washing machine, Onion chopper, sewing machine chips machine to engage them into IGA.


These income generation activities for many of them, was the only way to earn an income. The income women generate from such activities played important roles in meeting the food and other basic needs of their families.

Other than income generating scheme for parents, direct financial support in the form of Designated Fund for Children /DFC/ gift have been provided for sponsored children. The DFC gift enabled children to fulfill their basic needs like clothes, shoes, & educational reference materials etc. This financial support also assisted parents/caregivers to cover expenses of the basic need for household consumptions. Due to the DFC support, children were able to cover necessary educational materials to attend their school properly.

Pathway 3: Positives Peer and Adult Relationship

As part of improving positive peer and adults’ relationship for children aged from 7 to 14 years, FHIDO has been engaged in capacity building activities for school teachers and parents. One of the mechanisms was training on Aflatoun. The Aflatoun program seeks to empower children to believe in themselves, know their rights and responsibilities, understand and practice saving and spending, and start their own innovative enterprises. Aflatoun’s approach consists of a comprehensive curriculum which balances social education with finacials education. In order to embed the learning and ensure its future impact, children are encouraged to practice what they have learnt through participating in child-led social and financial activities such as organizing social campaigns, setting up savings systems and starting small scale financial enterprises

FHIDO, as one of the major partner in implementing Aflatoun program in Ethiopia, has been creating awareness for selected target schools in its operational areas so that Aflatoun clubs established in schools. Hence, as part of achieving the goal of introducing the concept and establishing Aflatoun clubs, FHIDO has been organizing training for teachers and peer educators to lead and conduct Aflatoun clubs in their respective schools.

Aflatoun manuals were made ready and disseminated to target schools which enabled teachers/facilitators to internalize the Aflatoun concepts to support children to be member of club as well as active participant and responsive. Now all participant schools and teachers use as a reference material and cascading the training to students.

Domain Two: Children & adolescents have age appropriate literacy, numeracy, and critical life skills to make healthy decisions.

Pathway 1: Community Leadership for Learning

Education is an indispensable element for socio-economic, political and technological development world over. For schools to provide quality education, they need to have their own source of income other than subsidy from government to run their day to day administration. Hence, FHIDO has been working with its target schools in the past with different forms of support in creating IGA through providing photocopy machine, refrigerator to generate income for target schools and sustain their extra need in the education process. For the school IGA, FHIDO assessed the capacity of target schools in terms of small business management. Other than utilizing the IGA budget to support necessary school facilities, the support enabled to cover expenses of highly vulnerable children get lunch service delivery in the school as well as to purchase additional reference books.

Beside the IGA support, to build the capacity of Parents Students and Teachers Association(PSTA’s) on resource mobilization, resource gap identification, identification of potential resource provider and major PSTA’s role different need based training provided to schools PSTA members. The capacity building trainings enables the PSTA’s to familiarize with their role to exert their effort for the overall development of the target schools. 

Pathway 2: Quality, Inclusive Formal and Alternative Basic Education

To ensure quality and inclusive education, FHIDO has been undertaking a number of activities and achieved significant results. It has been capacitating schools through trainings and provision of necessary materials.


The trainings provided to schools include training on child centered teaching methodologies & worksheet preparation, disability friendly school environment, on special needs education. The training on  child centered teaching methodologies for primary school teachers improved primary teachers awareness on child centered teaching methodologies & worksheet preparation for better educational achievement. After the trainings, worksheets including Amharic, Biology, Chemistry, English, Environmental science, Mathematics, physics and social work   subject from grades 1 up to 8 were printed and handed over to target schools which were then disseminated to students which facilitated the study of the students specially those who don’t have favorable environment at home and eased students access to a compiled material to refer.

The discussion forums on disability friendly school environment in schools provided for parent/caregivers, target school representatives, sub-city and district women and children affairs officers and youth officers of Arada sub-city enabled to aware  them on the need and requirements of creating disability friendly social environment in schools and various strategies to make schools disability friendly, challenge attitudes which reinforce and sustain discrimination and create an enabling environment to support inclusive education, including through cross-sectoral policies and strategies that reduce exclusion.


One of the factors for quality of education is the availability and proper use of school facilities and other needed resources. The quality of school facilities such as textbooks and furniture like desk and chairs etc. were found to be among the major barriers to education and have an effect on ensuring basic education services. In order to improve education quality and recognizing the existing limited education materials in schools, FHIDO provided target schools with different subjects of reference books, story and folktale books with library shelves, tables and chairs, laboratory equipment/apparatus. Laboratory equipment support enabled the school to effectively provide quality education within the required standards and encouraged student’s practical learning. The support generally facilitated the teaching-learning process and enabled the school to achieve higher learning outcome.


The reference materials support has alleviated the shortage of reference books and other materials in the targeted primary school. Now, as a result of the support, students are able to get additional reference materials which are at par with their age and level of grade. It also facilitated the teaching learning process and enabled the students to succeed on their learning. It also increased students visit to libraries and labs habit to read in a concentrated manner to achieve effectively in their education.


On the other hand, to reduce the existing gap and to actualize education for children with disabilities, FHIDO has been providing Instructional materials & school transportation fee support for children with impairment. The support enabled to create supportive environments through providing a transportation fee and instructional materials support for children with impairment. This support ensured access and quality education for the marginalized children with impairment. Meanwhile, supporting children with disabilities enrolled in the different levels of education (mostly in special schools or special classes in regular schools) has modestly increased. Hence, the support provided for students with disabilities abled them to cope with the regular schooling and to become independent learners.


Pathway 3: Life Skill for Wellbeing


All children have special talents that need to be noticed and nurtured so they will do well in school and in their later lives. In our society, students from diverse cultures have been overlooked by schools and families when they selected children for programs for the gifted. Schools and families use a very narrow definition of intelligence that did not account for the different ways that children show their abilities, or for the fact that some children have difficulty in showing their talents at all. Hence, FHIDO organized such activities to help children understand their hidden talents and develop. FHIDO has been working closely with schools and families in the identification and provision of separate support for those talented students in art. In this regard, to enhance and upgrade the fine art drawing capacity of the talented children, skill training was provided for talented children aged between 7 and 14 years old.  On the other hand, FHIDO has been working towards the establishment and strengthening of girls clubs in target schools so that club members promote their sexual and reproductive health needs and enhance their understanding on HIV/AIDS and STI issues. To strengthen the clubs, FHIDO has been constantly providing life skill trainings and necessary material support so that the club members become vibrant in the promotion of their needs and interests.


Pathway 4: Successful Transitions in Education


Every year FHIDO organized secondary school readiness workshop with the participation of 8th grade graduatestudents in order to increase their awareness on the new school environment they are about to join due to their transition from primary school to high school. The workshop created opportunity for students to share experience, how to schedule their time for study, and  imparted on issues of how to resist negative peer pressure and cope-up mechanisms. The workshop enabled students to prepare themselves for high schooling and kept them vigilant about the challenging issues they may face and acquired skills in team work, increased their self-confidence.


Domain Three: Children & adolescents are healthy and actively participate in community life.


Pathway 1: Access to Health Services


FHIDO created networking and partnership with different governmental and non-governmental health service providers and allowed almost all target children to get free and need based medical support. As a result of this health seeking behavior of target beneficiaries increased and child mortality rate occurred due to dearth of medical support significantly decrease in the target areas.  On the other hand, the different periodic health related awareness creation sessions improved the target community member’s health seeking practices considerably.  Besides, the sanitary pad support provided to female students who are from lower economic families and unable to get those materials from their parent/caregivers also helped target girl students to effectively attend their education and built their confidence during their stay in school.


Pathway 2: Safe Learning Environment

In order to avoid clean water shortage in the school, FHIDO has been exerted its outmost effort in creating access to potable water facilities through renovating and expanding existing water facilities as it is closely associated with student health. Recognizing the existing problem in water supply in schools, FHIDO renovated faucet water facilities in different primary schools. As a result of the renovation and construction of water facilities in schools, more children have got access to sufficient and potable water.



According to the school vulnerability assessment conducted by FHIDO, almost all target school playgrounds are dusty and unhealthy to play and exposed children and teachers for air borne diseases. Considering this harmful situation FHIDO constructed play ground in more than five schools found in the target area. The construction of the playground created child friendly school environment and enabled children to play and move safely.


Pathway 3: Positive engagement for CYA

In order to enhance positive and meaningful engagement of children, FHIDO organized different skill development session for target children. The sessions maximized target children participation in different school clubs and also on issues and challenges easily managed by children.


Pathway 4: Effective Community Based Child Protection Mechanisms.


For the last nearly one decade FHIDO provided need based capacity building support both material and technical support for woreda Child Protection Unites found in the target areas.



As a result of this support, partners understanding on guiding principles of child protection, improved and strengthened community-based child protection interventions to address child abuse issues.  It also improved key actors to play roles in collecting and monitoring information on child protection issues in sub-city and district level and effective and safe mechanisms established for children and adults to report abuse, neglect or exploitation of children.


During its project periods, many children both boys and girls of different ages have been reported to have rape case. FHIDO has been responding swiftly to the case in reporting and creating linkage with the government body and providing psychosocial support for the victims and their families. Moreover, it has been closely following such incidences so that their educational and psychological status is stabilizing.
